It appears that the new United ownership has finally secured their main man, Ashworth, for the first sporting director position at Old Trafford. Ashworth was Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’ top target.

United and Newcastle have been in negotiations over Ashworth since February, but the talks have never resulted in anything.

This is because the Magpies were requesting an irrational compensation package of up to £20 million in order to get their executive to start working at United right away and avoid serving out his notice period. INEOS made it very evident that they had no intention of paying such a high amount for non-playing personnel.

While both clubs were trying to resolve the impasse regarding Ashworth’s future, he was placed on gardening leave.

According to a report published on Sunday by The Peoples Person, United and Eddie Howe’s team were close to reaching a decision regarding his future.

David Ornstein announced earlier today that Ashworth would begin working at United right away after the two Premier League clubs achieved a breakthrough.

Newcastle and the 20-time English champions have since issued a statement verifying Ornstein’s claims.

“Newcastle United and Manchester United have reached an agreement for Dan Ashworth’s immediate release from his contractual obligations at Newcastle United,” the statement says.

“The clubs will keep the contents of this agreement private. Dan is appreciated for his services by Newcastle United, and the team wishes him well in the future.
Although Ashworth’s release terms are kept confidential by both parties, a recent report revealed how much United paid to hire Ashworth as a transfer and recruitment expert.

In order to complete the deal, Newcastle is said to have ultimately accepted an offer of “significantly less than £10 million.”
