Oxford United Set To Sign Highly-Rated Defender

Oxford United are set to sign AFC Wimbledon’s Jack Currie, according to a report from the South London Press.

Having gained promotion to the Championship via the play-offs last term, manager Des Buckingham knows that strength and depth in all areas is needed if the club want to be competitive and not just make up the numbers next term.

As a result of the manner of their promotion, the U’s are the current favourites for relegation, however they will almost certainly have an underdog mentality which could indeed serve them well throughout the year. The new campaign will be the club’s first time in the Championship and they are very much entering the unknown.

Nonetheless, after what can be considered a shock promotion, there is plenty of positivity around the club currently as well as some hope that they can prove all of the doubters wrong.

They’ve already added some fine talent to the squad, who also bring notable experience with them. The signings of Peter Kioso and Will Vaulks grab the headlines but Jamie Cumming, who spent the second half of the season on loan, as well as Louie Sibley who gained promotion with Derby County last season, add further depth to the squad.

It now seems as if another player is expected through the doors of the Kassam Stadium soon, with the South London Press revealing that the club are set to sign AFC Wimbledon’s Jack Currie.

Despite the move being a rather drastic step-up, Currie is still only 22 and already has 80 appearances in League Two under his belt. He’s been a mainstay down the left-hand side of the defence for the Dons over the past two seasons and has proved himself as quite the asset in the process.

Although last season didn’t quite go to plan for Johnnie Jackson’s side, missing out on the play-offs and finishing tenth, Currie had a fine year. As a result of the Dons failing to gain promotion there has been some speculation as to where his future is and that now looks to be with the Championship newcomers.

He may not be an instant starter but given he is a player with an upward trajectory currently, Currie could battle for a starting spot as the season goes on.

They may not be able to contend with the majority of their Championship rivals from a budget perspective, but there’s a lot to like about Oxford United’s early transfer business. Kioso, Vaulks, Cumming and Sibley are all very smart additions and Currie can be added to that list.

The defender is very much one for the future and although it may take time and the Championship is a step-up for him, he could prove himself as a proficient defender further down the line.

With just over a month until the start of the new campaign, don’t expect Currie to be the last name that is brought in, with Buckingham wanting further depth in the squad.
