Dietmar Hamann has blasted England’s performances at Euro 2024 after the Three Lions finished as runners-up.

Gareth Southgate’s side fell to Spain in the tournament’s finale in Berlin after Mikel Oyarzabal’s late strike proved the difference. Substitute Cole Palmer had given England cause for hope when his goal cancelled out that of Nico Williams but ultimately Spain proved themselves worthy winners.

England struggled to gain a foothold against Spain to exert sustained pressure against the newly-crowned European champions. Southgate’s team lacked threat for much of the tournament and won just two of their seven matches over the course of 90 minutes in Germany.

The ex-Middlesbrough boss drew frustration for England’s inclination to sit back until they were already behind. Former Liverpool and Newcastle midfielder Hamann believes England were responsible for some of the worst games of the tournament.

“The football was atrocious,” he told RTE Sport . “Out of the 10 worst games in the tournament, England was responsible for seven.

“With Kane, why he’s not moving, I do not know. They’ve been behind in all of their knockout games. If you had played Ollie Watkins, it’s dangerous. Palmer comes on and scores after five minutes.

“Now, imagine if this team goes ahead in one of their games. Imagine playing with Foden, you bring Eze on, you bring Gordon on. If this team is ahead, they won’t be pegged back because they’ve got players on the bench with ultimate pace.
