ECU baseball: Chrismon enters transfer portal
Nathan Chrismon is the latest East Carolina baseball player to enter the transfer portal.
The utility infielder, who just finished his sophomore season with the Pirates, was often used as a pinch-hitter and a pinch-runner. He displayed an ability to play at several positions across the infield.
Chrismon started one game in 2024 against Rice where he walked and scored two runs. Chrismon took 11 at-bats and finished with three RBIs and one hit coming against Campbell. He also went 5-for-6 in stolen base attempts this season.
In his two seasons at ECU, Chrismon served mostly as a backup infielder. He made six starts — five coming as a freshman in 2023. Chrismon batted .150 in 40 at-bats with six hits and five RBIs. He also added nine walks and a total of 13 stolen bases.
ECU enjoyed a memorable win in the LeClair Classic this season when Chrismon hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, in 11 innings.
Without Chrismon to fill in some vacancies, the Pirates will have a new-look infield next season with shortstop Joey Berini and second baseman Jacob Starling leaving the program after graduating. First baseman Carter Cunningham is out of eligibility as well, while third baseman Dixon Williams is the lone returner in the infield.
Williams could slide to his natural position at second while the Pirates fill other positions with young returners.
Rising sophomore infielder Nick Parham (who played in five games) is expected to return, along with rising sophomore Colby Wallace who played a chunk of the season at third base when Starling went down with an oblique injury.
Chrismon, a South Rowan recruit, is the latest ECU player to hit the portal following the team’s exit in the Greenville Regional after posting a 46-17 overall record in coach Cliff Godwin’s 10th season.
He is joined in the portal by starting pitcher Zach Root, outfielder Bristol Carter and pitcher Corey Costello who started the championship game of the regional. Carter, who batted .346 and made 46 starts, has since committed to Auburn.
Carter had a strong freshman season that saw him collect 55 hits, including seven doubles, one triple and two home runs, while scoring 30 runs and swiping four bases.
