sad news: Rabbitohs coach announce unexpected news…..

Latrell Mitchell injury updates: Will South Sydney Rabbitohs fullback return to play this season?

South Sydney remain hopeful that Latrell Mitchell will still have a part to play in their season despite the star suffering a foot injury.

The fullback picked up the issue during his side’s Round 18 victory over Parramatta which ensured their late-season revival rolled on with the Rabbitohs still possessing a slim chance of making the finals.

Mitchell’s injury came as a major blow to the Bunnies though and saw him miss out on the State of Origin decider where New South Wales toppled Queensland in their own backyard to claim the shield for the first time in three years.

The initial assessment was the No.1 would miss a month but a return to action in Round 23 is set to come too soon with the club providing another update on his condition.

“Mitchell has been really positive since succumbing to the foot injury he sustained against the Eels,” the club noted ahead of their Round 21 meeting with Canberra.

“He gets another scan (on Monday) to check on the widening and severity of the ligament damage. The club will know more once he’s met with the specialist, post-scan.”

The club have now revealed that while the scan results were positive, Mitchell will remain in a moonboot for the next month with a return in Round 26 now seen as the best-case scenario.

Mitchell played a starring role for the Blues during his re-emergence in the Origin arena in Game II, before returning to the fold for the Bunnies and helping to power them up the ladder.

He crossed for a try in the 32-16 win over the Eels, while also providing two assists and three linebreak assists.

However, the performance came at a cost as he sustained a foot injury earlier in the game.

Mitchell’s absence was sorely felt against the Dolphins the following week when the club’s five-match winning streak was snapped as they were able to convert just two of their six conversion attempts.

Although they did get back on track in Round 20 when they beat the Wests Tigers and kept their hopes of making a charge towards the finals alive.
