Hunter Greene gave up only one run over seven innings, and Jeimer Candelario hit a two-run homer as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 on Tuesday night, winning the series between the two NL Central teams.

Greene (9-4), known for his powerful throws, allowed four hits, struck out eight, and walked one. He earned his third straight win in a game that lasted just under two hours.

“My body felt really good,” Greene said. “I was able to use all my pitches well. My release point felt great. I felt super athletic and loose.”

When asked if he thinks of himself as the Reds’ top pitcher, Greene said, “That’s for others to decide. I’ve made up my mind to be one. I feel like my process has been solid and I’ve been consistent. But there’s still a lot of work ahead and the season isn’t over.”

Reds manager David Bell appreciates Greene’s confidence and aggressive approach. Greene was still throwing at 99 mph in his final inning.

“He’s pitching great,” Bell said. “Tonight was another step in his attacking mindset. I know the hitters notice that. It’s all about attacking, and he did it with his best fastball.”

Spencer Steer had an RBI single with two outs in the first inning. Ty France hit a homer off the Cardinals’ bullpen roof in the second, his 11th of the season.

Candelario hit his 19th homer with two outs in the sixth inning.

“I was just aiming for a good at-bat,” Candelario said. “I put myself in a good position to hit the ball hard and see what happens.”

Cardinals starter Erick Fedde (8-6) pitched six innings, giving up four runs and six hits while striking out two. He allowed both of the Reds’ home runs.

Nolan Arenado hit a 400-foot homer into the left-field seats in the seventh inning, reducing the Reds’ lead to three runs before Greene’s final inning.
