Newcastle may force Marc Guehi into accepting Chelsea fate before agreeing transfer

Newcastle United have seen multiple bids rejected for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

A shirt number has opened up for Marc Guehi at Newcastle United following Paul Dummett’s departure from St. James’ Park. But it would force the Crystal Palace defender to revert back to a number he sported during his Chelsea days.

The No.6 Guehi has occupied since signing for Crystal Palace in 2021 is currently taken by Jamaal Lascelles. And given the 30-year-old is Eddie Howe’s club captain, it seems unlikely that even a glamorous signing like Guehi could snatch it away.

Numbers 15, 16 and 27 are all available following the release of Newcastle’s squad number list earlier this month. But the natural fit for Guehi would be the No.3 vacated by Dummett upon the expiry of his contract at the end of June.

Guehi has not worn No.3 since breaking through into the senior game. He took numbers two and five during a two-season loan spell at Swansea City and has spent the last three-and-a-bit campaigns with six on his back.

The 24-year-old does at least have some familiarity with the number three. He earned a stellar reputation while working his way through Chelsea’s various youth teams and donned No.3 for the Blues’ Under-18s, Under-19s and Under-23s.

Whether Guehi ends up returning to his old number at Newcastle depends on whether the Magpies are able to lure him away from Selhurst Park.

The Magpies’ latest bid tipped the scales at £60million, plus a further £5m in add-ons. But Palace are believed to be holding out for a total package worth £70m to part with their star defender, who shone during England’s run to the Euro 2024 final.

With Newcastle beginning to doubt whether meeting Palace’s asking price would be good business, sporting director Paul Mitchell has reportedly started sounding out cheaper alternatives to Guehi.

Talks have been held over the signing of Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba, while Newcastle have made contact with Chelsea to register their interest in Axel Disasi, according to reports.

Fabian Schar and Dan Burn were the central-defensive partnership in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Southampton on Saturday. Howe also has Sven Botman, Lascelles and Lloyd Kelly in his ranks, while Emil Krafth is able to play across the back-line.

Schar picked up a three-match ban against the Saints for a clash of heads with Ben Brereton Diaz and will miss Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth.
