Andrew Luck sent shockwaves across the NFL when he retired from the Indianapolis Colts in August 2019, but there appears to be no bad blood between the two parties

Andrew Luck has expressed his heartfelt sentiments towards the Indianapolis Colts following a triumphant charity endeavour, signalling that there’s no lingering resentment nearly five years after his unexpected departure from the NFL.

The former quarterback caused a stir in August 2019 when he announced his retirement during the last quarter of a Colts preseason game, leading to a chorus of boos from the stands as he left the field. Despite this abrupt end to his career with the team, Luck holds onto positive recollections of his time with the organisation that picked him first in the 2012 NFL Draft.

“We were not perfect,” Luck reminisced during a rare public outing in Indianapolis, as reported by ESPN. “I know I was not perfect,” he continued.

“All of us wished we’d had multiple Super Bowls and done things and sort of vanquished some of those enemies that we didn’t quite ever get to. But I could probably speak for all the other guys, and I know I could speak for myself again – it wasn’t perfect, but we tried our best. We tried our hardest, and I hope we gave folks something to cheer about and something to be proud of. And I do get the sense that we [did].”

On Friday, Andrew Luck made a heartwarming return to Colts headquarters for Chuck Pagano’s Chuckstrong Tailgate Gala. The event, led by the former coach who battled leukemia during Luck’s first year with the team, aimed to raise funds for the Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“It’s great. I get excited coming back to this building,” Luck shared with journalists. “I get excited seeing Colts stuff and the horseshoe and seeing familiar faces. There’s still a ‘turn in’ that feels real, that’s what we did for so many years. So, it’s fun to support, fun to give back, just like Chuck is giving back to this community.”

In a thrilling moment at the fundraiser, Colts owner Jim Irsay pledged to donate $1 million if Luck and Pagano could knock down 16 cutouts of Pagano’s face with footballs within a minute. The retired quarterback, showing he hasn’t lost his touch, completed the challenge alongside his former coach.

Since hanging up his cleats, Luck has relocated to Northern California and is now pursuing further education at Stanford, where he played college football from 2008-2011. Despite leaving Indianapolis, where he spent six seasons in the NFL, the 34 year old affirmed that the city remains dear to him.

“I certainly feel like Indianapolis is a massive part of the fabric of who I am and where life has gone and highs and the lows and everything in between,” Luck expressed. “It feels very real. So, yeah, I certainly feel the love, in a sense, from the city, and I hope people know it’s reciprocal. We love this place.”
