Hawthorn coach just announce unexpected news……

Popular West Coast vice-captain Tom Barrass makes bombshell trade request to Hawthorn

The club has issued a statement just two months after the premiership hero said it was ‘hardly a story’.

Popular West Coast veteran Tom Barrass has confirmed his desire to be traded to Hawthorn.

The star defender told the AFL club of his wishes in his exit meeting this week, after it had previously been reported that he had met with Hawks coach Sam Mitchell.

West Coast have since said they will “protect their best interests” while doing a deal for the under-contract player.

“Tom has today informed us of his desire to pursue an opportunity at another club,” Eagles football manager Gavin Bell said.

“While the club respects Tom’s request, he is contracted for another three seasons and our vice-captain.

“We will endeavour to meet Tom’s request while protecting the best interests of the West Coast Eagles.”

The 28-year-old Barrass has played 150 games for West Coast was their best-and-fairest winner in 2022.

His current contract runs out at the end of 2027.

“I think we have got some progress we still need to make… before we can be considered a good team.

“But I believe that we can do it and I believe that if we work as a team it is a closer than people probably perceive.”

The Hawks currently hold draft picks 12, 30, 67 and 74, as well as their 2025 selections.

Barrass was a key member of West Coast’s 2018 premiership team but that now seems like a lifetime ago.

Since that magnificent triumph, the club has hit rock bottom, finishing third last this year, last in 2023, and second last in 2022.

Premiership coach Adam Simpson was also forced out this year as the Eagles look to reset and rebuild.

Meanwhile, Hawthorn and Mitchell have been applauded for their rebuild which has seen them make a surprise finals appearance this year.

Hawthorn finished third-bottom in 2023 and looked headed for another lowly finish this season, before turning things around and powering their way into the top eight.

The AFL’s Trade Period officially starts on October 7.
