After years of dominating the Big 12, the Sooners are finally a part of the Southeastern Conference. They have Seth Littrell and Joe Jon Finley as their new co-offensive coordinators in addition to Zac Alley as their new defensive coordinator. And at quarterback, they are at last fully embracing the Jackson Arnold era.
Those are all important considerations as No. 16 Oklahoma gets used to the SEC. The media predicted the Sooners to place eighth out of 16 teams, which is a significant departure from previous years when they were picked at or near the top of the Big 12. It will undoubtedly be a difficult road.

Oklahoma has depth at receiver even though talented player Jayden Gibson is sidelined for the entire campaign due to a knee injury.
Nic Anderson, who caught 38 passes for 798 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, is the top returner. Purdue transfer Deion Burks was selected as a third-team All-SEC pick ahead of the season. For 174 yards and two touchdowns in the first half of the spring game, he had five catches. Jalil Farooq, who caught 45 passes in the previous season, is back. Andrel Anthony is also making his way back after missing a large portion of the previous campaign due to a knee injury.
In his debut season at Oklahoma, Venables finished 6-7; the following year, he improved to 10-3. However, the Sooners have failed to qualify for any of the elite bowls during his tenure, and with the team joining the SEC and the playoffs expanding, anxious fans will be waiting for some action.
The past ten or so years have seen the Sooners have success against the SEC. In the final game of then-coach Bob Stoops’s tenure, they defeated Auburn in the Sugar Bowl following the 2017 season, defeated Alabama in the Cotton Bowl following the 2013 season, and easily defeated Florida in the Cotton Bowl in 2020.
Oklahoma defeated Tennessee in the regular season in 2014 and 2015, and following the 2017 season, they forced Georgia to overtime in the College Football Playoffs. In the 2018 and 2019 College Football Playoffs, the Sooners were defeated by Alabama and LSU, respectively.
Oklahoma offers a demanding schedule. The Sooners play Temple at home on August 30. On October 12, the Sooners take on Texas in the yearly Red River Rivalry game. The Sooners finish the regular season at LSU on November 30 and host Alabama on November 23 in a game that could be crucial for the playoffs.
