Today’s rugby news as Argentina v Australia ends in overnight anger and Welsh teams return

Argentina v Australia ref controversy

Argentina were left incensed by referee James Doleman after Ben Donaldson kicked a last-gasp penalty to secure a 20-19 victory for Australia in La Plata.

Doleman had informed the Pumas players there would be a restart following Donaldson’s penalty but instead blew for the final whistle. Australia had been awarded the penalty at 78:48 minutes but the clock was not stopped until 79:12 minutes which was the cause of Argentina’s anger. The Pumas players confronted the official at the end of the game.

Australia were forced to overturn a 10-0 deficit after a try from Saracens backrower Juan Martín González and penalties from Gloucester’s Santiago Carreras. The Wallabies hit back with a well-crafted try from scrum-half Jake Gordo,n with No 8 Rob Valetini also crossing the line.

Argentina kicked their way back into the lead before Donaldson knocked over the decisive penalty to secure the Wallabies their first victory of the Rugby Championship.
