Patrick Mahomes’ father has unexpected reaction to Chiefs cutting Kadarius Toney
The Kansas City Chiefs made waves on August 27 when they released wide receiver Kadarius Toney as part of their final roster cuts.
Toney, who joined the Chiefs in 2022 from the New York Giants, had shown moments of promise, including a pivotal play in Super Bowl LVII.
However, his time in Kansas City was marked by inconsistency and injuries, ultimately leading to his release. Among those surprised by the move was Patrick Mahomes Sr., father of the Chiefs’ star quarterback.
Mahomes Sr. Expresses Surprise
During an appearance on the 2 Gems and a Mic Sports Podcast, Patrick Mahomes Sr. shared his unexpected reaction to the news. “I didn’t really see it coming,” Mahomes Sr. admitted, reflecting on Toney’s departure.
Despite the wide receiver’s struggles, including injuries and missed opportunities, Mahomes Sr. believed Toney still had potential to contribute to the team, especially after his standout performance in the Super Bowl.
Toney’s tenure with the Chiefs was a rollercoaster. His highlight came in Super Bowl LVII, where a 65-yard punt return set up the game-winning touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles. Yet, despite this heroics, Toney battled injuries, including a meniscus tear that required surgery, limiting his impact. Upon his return, he struggled with dropped passes and critical errors, leading to growing concerns about his consistency.
Mahomes Sr. also pointed out what could have been for Toney, particularly under the NFL’s new kickoff rules. “He could have been an asset,” Mahomes Sr. said, noting Toney’s potential as a return specialist. However, with a crowded wide receiver room, Toney faced tough competition for a spot on the roster.
Toney’s struggles were compounded by his absence from the postseason lineup last year. Even though he returned for preseason camp this year, his time with the Chiefs ended abruptly. The decision to cut Toney marked a disappointing end to what began as a promising acquisition when the Chiefs traded for him from the Giants in exchange for draft picks.
Chiefs GM Brett Veach also commented on the decision, acknowledging that while it was a tough call, the depth of the team’s wide receiver group made it necessary.
