Positive Update: The head coach of the Lions has been rewarded with an early contract renewal….

‘Insiders are really confident’: Lions coach rewarded with early contract extension

Brisbane senior coach Chris Fagan will add another year to his contract following the Lions’ powerful resurgence in 2024.

Fagan was already contracted for next season, but his guidance of Brisbane’s turnaround this year has inspired added confidence in the club’s higher-ups.

Herald Sun journalists Glenn McFarlane and Jon Ralph confirmed the story on Wednesday evening.

“Chris Fagan will sign an extra year on his contract,” McFarlane stated on Fox Footy’s Midweek Tackle.

“He was already contracted for 2025, but the Lions have been so impressed by the way he’s handled their poor start to this year.”

It will stretch Fagan’s deal through to the end of the 2026 season.

It is understood the outcome of Brisbane’s finals campaign has no bearing on the club’s decision to recommit to Fagan for a further year.

Brisbane began the season with three consecutive losses and was just 4-1-6 after Round 12. However, after its bye, Fagan’s side shaped a nine-game winning streak to surge back into top-four calculations.

“The way he has been able to keep this group together and get them back into finals; the insiders at the club are really confident that he is the guy going forward. He’s 63; he doesn’t coach like he’s 63,” McFarlane continued.

“He told Jay Clark last week that he would walk away if he didn’t have the players — he’s got the players, there’s no doubt, and the Brisbane hierarchy knows that.

“If this gets through to the end of 2026… this will make him the longest serving coach in Brisbane Lions history, he’ll pass Leigh Matthews. Will he have a premiership by the end of that contract?”

The question that lingers over Fagan is that ability to guide his side to the ultimate glory — despite five consecutive finals trips, the Lions have come up empty-handed each time, including a pair of straight sets exits and last year’s heartbreak on Grand Final day.

In eight seasons coached by the 63-year-old — including his first two in the midst of a rebuild — the Lions have a 58.7 winning percentage, while his finals clip sits at a more modest 46.2 per cent.

After crushing Carlton in last Saturday’s elimination final, Brisbane travels to Sydney to play GWS in a semi-final this Saturday night at ENGIE Stadium.
