HEARTBREAKING LOSE: 2 KEY PLAYERS DEPARTED ECU BASEBALL JUST NOW…

What Mike Houston said after ECU’s 55-24 loss to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — East Carolina head coach Mike Houston addressed the media on Saturday after the team’s 55-24 loss to Charlotte. ECU dropped to 3-3 after the setback, and 1-1 in conference play. Charlotte improved to 3-3, and 2-0 in the league.

Following the loss, which saw Charlotte control most of the game, Houston met with the media. Here’s what he had to say.

“It’s been a challenging day for us today. Not the way we want to play. I apologize to our fans because that’s not what I expected us to do today, and it’s not the standard for us. You can put it on me, you can put it on our coaching staff, whoever. But I’m the head football coach and I’m responsible for our performance, and that’s not what we want it to be.”

On if he sensed anything like this coming pregame

“No. Our kids were ready to go. We were excited about this matchup. Charlotte came out and drove down and scored. We came back and had a chance to go right back at it. We did make a couple of plays. We dropped a couple of passes, but still, I thought our guys were ready to go. But obviously, Charlotte did a very good job with their offensive attack today, their game plan today. It’s been a long time since somebody’s done that to us, so we got to take a really good look at the film.”

On what caused the issues in stopping the run

“Well, we knew that we were facing a very good offensive line. They invested a lot in that front, and they’re very talented. Still, we faced good offensive fronts before. I thought their ability to throw the football early, that gave them some momentum. Then I thought in the second half, they did a good job of wearing us down. We’ve got to be able to get off the field, and we’ve also got to do a better job of driving the football offensively and keeping our defense off the field.”

On going to QB Katin Houser off the bench

“Well, it just felt like Jake (Garcia) was pressed a little bit. He just was doing some uncharacteristic things. So it felt like Katin deserved a shot. He did a good job this week in practice. I’m glad we got him in there and got him some work. Certainly, both of them have a lot of things they can improve on.”
