Social media reacts to Alabama football’s Malachi Moore after tantrum, public apology

Alabama football defensive back Malachi Moore’s fit in Saturday’s loss to Vanderbilt sent Crimson Tide fans on social media into a tizzy of their own.

Rather than his accomplishments on the field, the top Google search results surrounding the permanent team captain include “Malachi Moore tantrum” at No. 1 and “Malachi Moore suspended” at No. 3. As of Monday morning, he had not been suspended by Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer.

Just one 45-second video of Moore lashing out − first punching himself in the helmet before throwing his mouthpiece and kicking the ball at the referee − has attracted nearly 100,000 views, and a some comments noted that the senior was “acting younger” than his 17 year-old superstar teammate Ryan Williams.

Moore released a statement on his account on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday morning apologizing to his team, coaches, fans, alumni and his own family for his actions.

‘I was completely out of line’:Malachi Moore apologizes for outburst during Alabama vs Vanderbilt

“I was completely out of line,” Moore said. “I let the emotions of the game get the best of me and put myself before the team.

“As a two-time captain and a fifth-year player, I understand the standard that we are expected to live up to at Alabama, and I failed to do so by acting in a selfish and unacceptable manner.”

Moore, who opted to forgo the 2024 NFL Draft earlier this year, expressed that he returned to Tuscaloosa to represent himself, the team and the school because of what it means to him, knowing he is “blessed to wear the ‘A'” on his chest.

Immediate responses to Moore’s comments lacked the criticism he received over the weekend. That’s possibly because the only users who could reply were ones that he followed the app, or mentioned in the post.

Nonetheless, teammates old and new showed their support. Alabama freshman defensive back Tony Mitchell replied that he was “behind” Moore “no matter what.” Recent Crimson Tide safety DeMarcco Hellams, who now plays for the Atlanta Falcons, responded, “Still w you.”

Alabama’s first-ever Heisman trophy winner and former NFL running back Mark Ingram II wrote, “You a real one G!! Keep going!!”
