How the LSU women’s lone freshman impressed Kim Mulkey in her first career start
Two injuries and an absence forced the LSU women’s basketball team to insert a freshman point guard into the starting lineup Tuesday against Charleston Southern.
And Jada Richard did enough to impress coach Kim Mulkey.
The freshman from Lafayette scored 11 points and dished out six assists. She converted all four of her field goal attempts, including three shots from beyond the arc. She committed only two turnovers, helping the No. 7 Tigers (3-0) play clean basketball in a 73-point drubbing of Charleston Southern.
“She’s a true point guard,” Mulkey said, “but I’ll tell you, the girl can shoot the ball.”
Mulkey said Shayeann Day-Wilson, who started each of LSU’s first two games at point guard, suffered a minor shoulder injury in Monday’s practice. She could’ve played Tuesday, Mulkey said, but the team decided to sit her as a precaution.
LSU already was missing two of the three other point guards on its roster. Mississippi State transfer Mjracle Sheppard is recovering from a stress reaction injury she suffered before the season started, and senior Last-Tear Poa had not practiced or appeared in a game. Mulkey said she was set to return to practice Wednesday.
