Four-star running will return to Ohio State’s campus: Buckeye Breakfast

Ohio State University has demonstrated a strong commitment to enhancing its running back roster by securing commitments from several four-star running backs in recent years. These strategic additions are poised to significantly bolster the Buckeyes’ offensive capabilities in the coming seasons.

Bo Jackson’s Commitment

In June 2024, Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph’s four-star running back, Bo Jackson, committed to Ohio State. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 205 pounds, Jackson was the first running back to commit under new running backs coach Carlos Locklyn. Jackson’s decision followed an official visit where he expressed a strong connection with head coach Ryan Day and a deep appreciation for the “brotherhood” within the Ohio State program.  His high school performance was impressive, with nearly 1,700 rushing yards and 30 total touchdowns in his junior year, averaging almost 10 yards per carry.

Anthony Rogers’ Signing

On December 4, 2024, Montgomery (Ala.) Carver’s four-star running back, Anthony Rogers, signed with Ohio State during the Early Signing Period. At 5 feet 8 inches and 190 pounds, Rogers brings versatility to the Buckeyes’ backfield. His high school career included stints at three different schools, culminating in a senior season at Carver with 221 rushing yards and two touchdowns, along with 478 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Rogers’ all-around ability and track-star speed, evidenced by a 22.42-second 200-meter run in 2022, position him as a dynamic addition to the Ohio State roster.

James Peoples’ Addition

In April 2023, San Antonio Veterans Memorial’s four-star running back, James Peoples, committed to Ohio State. Rated as the No. 65 overall prospect and the fifth-ranked running back nationally, Peoples chose the Buckeyes over other top programs, including Oklahoma and Texas. His high school achievements were notable, with a junior year totaling 2,044 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns, and a senior year with 898 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns despite missing several games due to injury. Peoples’ commitment addressed the departure of Jordan Marshall to Michigan and underscored Ohio State’s intent to maintain a strong running game.

Impact on Ohio State’s Running Game

The influx of these four-star running backs—Bo Jackson, Anthony Rogers, and James Peoples—adds depth and talent to Ohio State’s running game. With potential departures to the NFL, notably TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins, the competition for starting positions will intensify. James Peoples, in particular, is anticipated to vie for significant playing time, especially if Henderson opts for the NFL. The depth chart will also feature returning players like Dallan Hayden, with the possibility of Jackson and Rogers making immediate impacts.

Recruiting Strategy and Future Outlook

Ohio State’s strategic focus on recruiting top-tier running backs aligns with the program’s tradition of excellence and its commitment to a dynamic, run-oriented offense. The relationships fostered by Coach Locklyn, both during his tenure at Oregon and now at Ohio State, have been instrumental in attracting these high-caliber athletes. Looking ahead, the Buckeyes are expected to continue their pursuit of elite talent, aiming to secure commitments from additional top prospects to further strengthen their running back corps.

In summary, Ohio State’s recent recruitment of four-star running backs reflects a deliberate and effective strategy to enhance their offensive prowess. The diverse skill sets and experiences of Jackson, Rogers, and Peoples are set to contribute significantly to the Buckeyes’ success in the upcoming seasons.
