Club boss hoping for further Derby County deals after striker transfer

Latest Derby County news from DerbyshireLive brings you the details of a move involving a striker released at the end of the season

Former Derby County striker Emmanuel Ilesanmi has signed for Telford United.

The forward was released by Derby at the end of last season and the Bucks have wasted no time in snapping him up for their National League North campaign.

Telford boss Kevin Wilkin had tried to sign the forward last season, but he headed to National League South side Torquay United instead.

Ilesanmi is Telford’s fourth summer signing and Wilkin was happy to have finally landed the striker at the second attempt.

“We were aware of him last season, and tried to get him in,” he said.

“But they (Derby) wanted him to play at Step 2; that was where they pitched it and where they felt we needed to be playing, so we’ve had to be a little bit patient with it, but once we knew he was available, we stepped up our interest.”

Ilesanmi began his career with Harrogate and moved to Derby in the summer of 2024.

He was sent on loan to Torquay where injury saw him return to Pride Park, but he then moved back once he has recovered in March.

Wilkin is hopeful of developing the 20-year-old and said: “He’s got the profile, a young, up-and-coming player that needs a run of games.

“He’s got to gain that little bit of experience but certainly he’s the right age, he’s a physical, strong lad and we need some options across the front, striking options, and he’ll certainly provide that.”

Derby’s Harry Hawkins enjoyed a successful loan with the Bucks last season with the midfielder catching the eye.

And Wilkin is hopeful of doing further business for Derby’s academy prospects in a bid to help their development.

“We spoke to Derby about Manny and one or two other players as well,” he said.

“They produce good players who do come through and others who perhaps have to take a step back to move forward through non-league to get back into full-time football.

“Speaking with people I know in and around Derby, they recommended Manny and said, ‘yeah, definitely give him a shot’, so here we are.”
