Sources share latest update as consortium facing tricky battle to secure takeover of Wrexham old rivals

One of Wrexham’s rivals could soon be competing with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney after their success at Wrexham.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have enjoyed unmatched success since they completed their Wrexham takeover in 2021.

With the help of manager Phil Parkinson, the Red Dragons have managed to secure a record-breaking three promotions in a row as they now prepare for life in the Championship.

It comes after Wrexham spent 15 years in the National League following years and years of poor ownership.

While Rob and Ryan’s club are on an upward trajectory, however, one of their old rivals has been suffering.

However, the club in question have been approached for a takeover and an update on the situation has now been shared.

Gareth Bale taking over Cardiff City update

Gareth Bale confirmed his intention to take over Cardiff City as part of a consortium in June.

He said: “[Cardiff] is a club close to my heart. It’s where I grew up and I would love to be able to be a part of growing Cardiff and taking it to the Premier League where it belongs. I know how amazing the Welsh fans and Cardiff fans are. It would be amazing to try and do something together.

“We are trying to engage with Cardiff, and more news will come out on that in the future, but hopefully we can get something done.”

Now, a new update on the situation has emerged via the BBC this week.

It is understood the Bale-led group has made a second approach to buy the Welsh outfit.

However, Cardiff sources have told them that no proposals received so far would lead them to consider selling.

Current Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan is thought to have dismissed both proposals quickly.

Wrexham want to sign Cardiff City players

Cardiff were relegated to League One in 2024/25, meaning they won’t be competing against Reynolds and McElhenney’s club this year.

However, the two teams could still be in contact over some potential transfers this summer.

Wrexham have been linked with several Cardiff players in recent weeks – striker Callum Robinson, Ollie Tanner, and Isaak Davies.

New manager Brian Barry-Murphy commented on transfers recently, saying: “The key message I had was that there was no pressure to sell any player in the squad. A key process moving forward is, anything we want to improve in the club, I have the absolute support of the people at the top of the club to do that. That will be the mantra of pre-season and beyond.

“I’m really pleased with the squad and excited to start working with them next Monday. The most important factor for me was the assurance that a large number of this playing squad, which I know really well — players I’ve either worked with before or seen from the outside — are going to remain here.

“Any players we lose are going to be on our terms, not because we have to sell players, and that’s really important.”

After previous loan spells away from the Racecourse Ground, it looks like Jake Bickerstaff will once again depart Wrexham, either on a loan or permanent basis.

With Bickerstaff’s future up in the air, eagle-eyed Wrexham fans spotted that he was involved in training with National League side Oldham Athletic, where he is seemingly on trial.

Wrexham now set to face nine teams with real pedigree in promotion race including newfound rivals

Bickerstaff’s tenure at Wrexham has been very stop-and-start, having not been handed a single minute of game time since the 2023/24 season. In the second half of that campaign, he endured a difficult spell at Accrington Stanley before moving to Altrincham in the 2024/25 season.
