The captain of Ipswich Town has finally been signed by Portsmouth, completing a huge transaction, according to BBC SPORTS NEWS.

Derby County: Ipswich Town's Sam Morsy on radar

Derby County keen on move for Ipswich Town skipper

Derby County are keen on Ipswich Town midfielder Sam Morsy, according to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.

Derby County are interested in landing the Egypt international this summer. DCFC are preparing for another year in the Championship.

Morsy, 33, is under contract at Ipswich Town until June 2026. He joined the Tractor Boys back in 2021 and has since made 165 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 11 goals.

In this latest update regarding his situation by journalist Nixon on Patreon, he has emerged on the radar of the Rams. They have already delved into the market to sign Andi Weimann, Danny Batth and Carlton Morris.

Morsy was handed a new two-year deal last year at Portman Road. At the time, he told their official club website: “To extend my stay at this special club is something I’m really proud of. I’m going into my fourth season at the Club now and we’ve had unprecedented success during the last two years, which is something I’m honoured to have been involved in. It’s great to feel the Club and the Manager’s commitment to me at such an exciting time for everyone, as we prepare for what is the biggest challenge of them all.”

Derby County could see Morsy as someone to boost their midfield ranks. If he joined DCFC, he would inject valuable experience into their squad.

The Midlands-born man started his career with spells as a youngster at Wolves and Port Vale. He then spent three years at Chesterfield before Wigan Athletic came calling.

Morsy was a hit during his time with the Latics and played 164 matches altogether, finding the net on nine occasions. He was also loaned out to Barnsley during his time in the North West.

Middlesbrough swooped in before he linked up with Ipswich Town. He has since been a key player for the Tractor Boys but his long-term future is up in the air.

What now for Derby County?

Derby County were too close to the drop zone for comfort last season. DCFC stayed up on the final day after a draw with Stoke City and will be hoping to compete higher up the division in the next campaign.

Morsy would be a shrewd addition if the Rams were able to get him. He spent last term in the Premier League with Ipswich Town and played 34 games.

John Eustace moved to Pride Park back in February and the ex-Birmingham City man has done an impressive job so far. He left fellow second tier side Blackburn Rovers to take over his current club.

Sheffield Wednesday looking into re-signing ex-Owls midfielder on free transfer

Sheffield Wednesday are exploring the possibility of bringing Stuart Armstrong back to Hillsborough after his short-team deal with the Owls expired earlier this summer.

Armstrong joined the Owls in January after a brief stint with Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS, and made just six starts before being released at the end of the campaign.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri is under increasing pressure to resolve the club’s cash flow issues, with Wednesday unable to pay transfer fees until at least 2027.

The 51-cap Scotland star made 214 appearances for Southampton, including 149 in the Premier League – after successful spells at Celtic and Dundee United, where he netted 49 goals throughout his eight years north of the English border.

Stuart Armstrong emerges as target for Sheffield Wednesday

Southampton's Stuart Armstrong

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Sheffield Wednesday are keen to bring Armstrong back to S6 after being forced to only sign free agents.

Armstrong’s willingness to accept a pay-cut is seen as crucial, but the chance to play a regular role in the second-tier next season and revive any hopes of international football could be the key.

Reports also suggest that players are due around £1.6m for both May and June, with some being paid before others – this could perhaps be a worry in Armstrong’s mind when he weighs up where to go next.

Given his advancing age though and lack of real playing time in 2025, there is a chance that Armstrong may accept a return to Hillsborough, given the fact that the Owls are heavily restricted on what kind of players they can bring in.

Wrexham provide competition for Stuart Armstrong – but Sheffield Wednesday hold the advantage

The race for Armstrong’s signature is far from straightforward. Wrexham, backed by high-profile owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, also want experienced Championship players to bolster their newly-promoted squad.

As a result, the Welsh outfit are reportedly interested in the attacking midfielder, but are yet to formalise an offer.

Reports also say it’s likely that any prospective deal by Sheffield Wednesday will be on less favourable terms than before, so there does lie a great chance of Wrexham being the ones to offer better terms – if they ever do.

Wednesday’s best hope may be to move quickly and table an offer before their pre-season tour, and if they can settle outstanding wage and transfer arrears as soon as possible, it may very well help them beat Wrexham to secure the re-signing of Armstrong.
