Bryan Mbeumo to Man United transfer U-turn as private Brentford stance changes

Man United were closing in on the signing of Bryan Mbeumo before Brentford appointed Keith Andrews as their new head coach with the deal now in the balance

Manchester United have been linked with signing Bryan Mbeumo all summer. Ruben Amorim’s side have had several offers for the Cameroon forward turned down, the most recent being £60million, as Brentford firmly stick to their valuation.

The two sides remain significantly apart in their respective valuations and Brentford’s appointment of Keith Andrews disrupted progress. Andrews is another internal appointment at Brentford, succeeding Thomas Frank.

The new Tottenham boss was reportedly interested in Mbeumo, but it appears the north London club have now shifted their focus elsewhere. This leaves United with a clear path to the Brentford star, who is keen on the move, but they have struggled to agree on a fee.

The Manchester Evening News understands that the arrival of Andrews as head coach has caused a delay to any deal.

Mbeumo netted 20 times last season and has become the club’s main attacking force, stepping up admirably following the departure of Ivan Toney.

United had hoped to secure Mbeumo ahead of their pre-season, having initiated negotiations for the 25 year old weeks ago. This hasn’t transpired as planned, but if they can strike a deal, he could still join them on their tour of the United States.

Brentford’s director of football, Phil Giles, has stated that the club will only engage in transfer dealings if it benefits them, leaving the door open for Mbeumo to remain in west London for the foreseeable future.

The ball is now in Man United’s court to offer an acceptable sum.

He stated: “We’ve made our point clear. If Bryan earned a massive move now and it was right for us financially, we’d be open to it. But if he ended up here with us next season, I wouldn’t be massively surprised. We’d be delighted. And it would save me a massive headache, frankly.”

Mbeumo could see a significant increase in his salary if he secures a move to Manchester, which remains a possibility. Brentford have identified another forward, Omari Hutchinson from Ipswich, who could potentially replace Mbeumo should he depart.
