Sheffield United ‘set’ to beat Celtic and Hull City to sign 16-goal Premier League starlet on loan
With a new manager at the helm ahead of the 2025/26 season, Sheffield United are poised to complete one of the coups of the summer transfer window.
A transitional period is occurring at Sheffield United this summer, as they look to go one better than their Championship play-off final defeat in the upcoming campaign.
In the wake of the Wembley showpiece defeat, Sheffield United sacked Chris Wilder in a decision which proved to be an unpopular one among the Blades fanbase.
Sheffield United appointed Ruben Selles to replace Wilder, and the Spaniard is facing a testing summer transfer window within his first weeks in charge, after standout star Vini Souza joined Wolfsburg in a major blow to Selles’ squad.
However, the Blades are now set to win the race to sign an impressive Premier League prospect on loan ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

Louie Barry set to join Sheffield United on loan from Aston Villa
The Blades have already been active in the loan market throughout the window, as Selles targeted Tyler Bindon, his former Reading captain, for a season-long stint at Bramall Lane on loan from top flight Nottingham Forest.
During his time at the League One outfit, Selles promoted the Australian defender to captain despite more experienced players around him, and now the Spaniard is poised to recruit another one of his favourite former loanees to Sheffield United.
After weeks of speculation regarding Louie Barry’s future, the Aston Villa ace is “expected to join Sheffield United” on loan for the 2025/26 campaign.
According to Sky Sports, Celtic were also interested in recruiting the 22-year-old winger, who scored 16 goals in 24 games for Stockport County last season.
Sky Sports’ report adds: “Everything has been agreed between the clubs and the player and he is set to join up with the Blades next week.”
Statistic | Stockport County | Hull City |
Games played | 24 | 4 |
Goals | 16 | 0 |
Assists | 2 | 0 |
In the second half of last season, Barry was recalled by Villa and sent to Selles’ Hull City on loan, where he was unfortunately sidelined for most of the rest of the campaign with an injury which limited his Tigers appearances to just four.
Hull were set to sign Barry for a £3.5m fee earlier this month. However, the deal fell through amid financial concerns on the Tigers’ part, after Hull were hit with a three-window transfer embargo.
Judging off Selles’ appraisal of Barry from after his Hull arrival, and the comments the former Barcelona prospect also made of the Spaniard, their reunion could be the catalyst for the Blades’ automatic promotion push next term.

Louie Barry reunion with Ruben Selles can send Sheffield United to Premier League
The Blades are in desperate need of reinforcements in wide areas after Ben Brereton Diaz’s loan stint from Southampton curtailed, and Barry’s acquisition would solve that problem perfectly.
Selles is already well aware of the qualities the Englishman will bring to Bramall Lane. He told Hull Live of Barry earlier this year: “He’s always a threat when he has the ball… I think he’s a really good player.”
The player himself has also previously praised his again soon to be boss, with Barry telling Hull’s website after arrival on loan: “I spoke to the gaffer (Ruben Selles) and he said all the right things.
“I watched the Sheffield United game (Sheffield United 0 – Hull City 3) and that was a big turning point for me because everything the gaffer said was spot on and came to fruition.”
Both Barry and Selles have huge admiration for each other, and the Bramall Lane fanbase ought to be very excited after signing one of the EFL’s most prolific young prospects, who played the best football of his career to date at Stockport last season.
If the Villa loanee can stay fit, his proven eye for goal and sublime dribbling ability in the final third could be the cutting edge the Blades need to get over the promotion line in the 2025/26 Championship campaign.
