Dejphon Chansiri resolves financial fiasco just in time but Sheffield Wednesday fans insist 'the issue' remains

Dejphon Chansiri has already destroyed key relationship as Sheffield Wednesday handed brutal verdict

The 2025/26 Championship season is only weeks away from kicking off, and Sheffield Wednesday’s preparations couldn’t have gone any worse.

Transfer embargoes, a mass exodus of players leaving Hillsborough, uncertainty surrounding the future of Danny Rohl, and zero signings through the door have all led many to believe Sheffield Wednesday will be relegated from the Championship.

The problems all started this summer when Dejphon Chansiri failed to pay his players, with the EFL handing the Owls a transfer embargo, which meant a max wage restriction of £7k-per-week on new signings and only being able to capture players on a free transfer or loan without a fee involved.

Supporters are desperate for Chansiri to sell the club, and while there has been takeover interest in Sheffield Wednesday, they are still no closer to finding a suitable buyer.

But it’s become clear that the longer the Malaysian is in charge at Hillsborough, the more the South Yorkshire side will suffer.

Sheffield Wednesday’s relationships with Premier League clubs destroyed by Chansiri

The loan market is an avenue most Championship clubs explore. Sheffield Wednesday are the prime example, as last summer, they signed James Beadle on loan from Brighton while loaning Shea Charles from Southampton.

As their transfer restrictions mean they cannot pay a percentage of loan players’ wages, it is unfortunately difficult for them to capture talented youngsters from a Premier League club.

But equally, Chansiri’s failure to pay his current Sheffield Wednesday squad and staff has destroyed any chances of the Owls being able to take top-flight players on loan, according to finance expert Kieran Maguire.

“If I was a Premier League club looking to loan a player to a Championship this season, and lots of them are, would Sheffield Wednesday be the top of my list? I suspect not,” Maguire said on the Wednesday Til’ I Die podcast.

“Because they have a professional responsibility towards the young men that they send out on loan, that they’re operating in the right environment, that they are going to be paid, and also from that Premier League club’s point of view, they want to get paid. It is a business.”

Due to the problems created by Chansiri and his financial troubles, Sheffield Wednesday fans are watching their squad get decimated, having seen the likes of Anthony Musaba, Djeidi Gassama, Michael Smith, and Callum Paterson leave the club recently.

While Windass is close to joining Wrexham, Gassama starred on his Champions League debut for Rangers, scoring a wonderful goal after coming off the bench.

With the prospect of the players not being paid for July, more could walk out of the club, and Akin Famewo is already in talks with Hull City.

As it stands, Wednesday will start the Championship season in the worst way possible, and only a change in ownership could increase their positivity.

Djeidi Gassama has broken Sheffield Wednesday hearts already with Rangers debut, ‘hurts to see’

Djeidi Gassama’s departure to Rangers already left Sheffield Wednesday fans saddened, and now, salt has firmly been rubbed into the wounds.

As part of Dejphon Chansiri’s fire sale, Gassama was sold to Rangers for just £2.2 million, leaving Owls supporters angered by how low the fee was.

Gassama was an integral player for Danny Rohl last term with seven goals in 43 Championship outings, and the Frenchman was only going to get better.

But unfortunately, with Chansiri failing to pay his players and staff on numerous occasions, no one could blame the 21-year-old for making a swift exit.

Sadly, on his debut for Rangers, he’s already proven why Sheffield Wednesday fans were annoyed to see him leave Hillsborough, especially for a fee of £2.2 million.

Although Gassama angered Rangers fans by turning up to negotiations in a Boston Celtics jersey, supporters have quickly forgotten about that innocent mistake after watching him on Tuesday evening.

Rangers hosted Panathinaikos in the first leg of Champions League qualifying. Russell Martin started the fleet-footed winger on the bench, but with the score at 1-0, Gassama was introduced in the 75th minute.

And on his debut at Ibrox, he wasted no time endearing himself to Europe’s elite competition. Just three minutes after coming off the bench, the former Sheffield Wednesday star wheeled away in celebration after rifling a strike past Bartłomiej Dragowski.
