‘Keen on project’ – Fabrizio Romano suggests Newcastle United close to huge transfer breakthrough
Newcastle United are reportedly readying a fresh approach for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa.
An opening bid worth around £25million is understood to have been turned down. NewcastleWorld were initially sceptical when links emerged involving Wissa a fortnight ago.
Turning 29 in September, the DR Congo international will also miss a chunk of next season due to AFCON commitments. However, the deal now appears plausible as Newcastle change tack after several transfer knockbacks.
Newcastle United’s string of rejection
Liam Delap and Joao Pedro were top targets heading into the summer window. Both players joined Chelsea, with the Magpies switching their attention to Hugo Ekitike, a player who stung them twice before in 2022.
The Frenchman snubbed Newcastle for a third time and now looks set to join Liverpool. Frustration has emanated around Tyneside just over three weeks until the campaign kicks off against Aston Villa.
To make matters worse, Eddie Howe dropped a huge hint on Alexander Isak’s future following the defeat to Celtic on Saturday. The Toon boss admitted he left the Swede out due to the ongoing transfer speculation.
Yoane Wissa now a top target
Newcastle have always targeted a striker – regardless of the Isak situation – to succeed Callum Wilson at St James’ Park. Wissa netted 19 Premier League goals last season and can also operate on the left.
The Brentford man is thought to be keen on the move despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur – now managed by former Bees boss Thomas Frank. Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed Wissa is keen on Newcastle and negotiations are set to continue.
“Newcastle are prepared to approach Brentford again for Yoane Wissa with a new bid set to be submitted,” he posted on social media. “Wissa, keen on (the Newcastle) project and Champions League chance. Negotiations set to continue.”
Thomas Frank on Brentford duo
Speaking as Brentford manager in May, Frank insisted it would take “a lot of money” to sign Wissa or Bryan Mbeumo, who completed his Manchester United move earlier this week. He said: “I would like them to stay. I would love for both players to stay at the club.
“We all know that we are a selling club but they are that good, they need to be a very good club with a lot of money to pay for what they get, they’ve got quality both of them.
“Both of them have developed massively, Bryan has been here six years and has definitely done everything he can and just added layers every single season. And both of them are performing at a top level.”
