Breaking through the ice to help the Indiana fever defeat Phoenix Mercury, Caitlin Clark falls just short of setting a rookie WNBA record.
In the WNBA, the Indiana Fever defeated the Phoenix Mercury 88-82 after rallying from a 15-point deficit in the second half. Caitlin Clark led the way despite having only recently recovered from a migraine. The other game on Sunday night saw the Minnesota Lynx defeat the Chicago Sky 70-62, led by Kayla McBride and Napheesa Collier.

The Fever fell behind 17–4 early in the game, and despite a small comeback, they were only behind 11 points at the break.
Mercury’s lead then increased to 15 points once more, but the Fever pulled off a spectacular comeback led by Clark, who finished with 15 points, 12 assists, and 9 rebounds.
Christie Sides, the head coach of the Fever, stated that Clark, who came up just short of recording the first rookie triple-double in WNBA history, didn’t “feel well throughout the entire game.”
She did, however, play for 39 minutes and 27 seconds, leaving the game during the last few minutes.
“I’m simply happy we won,” Clark told ESPN, noting that she experienced migraines while in college.
“Playing against [Diana Taurasi] was interesting, and the game was undoubtedly excellent. This was such an amazing crowd.”
Diana Taurasi, 42, of the Mercury, is currently the WNBA’s all-time top scorer and is in her 20th season of play.
“It’s amazing what Caitlin’s been able to do in her short career so far,” Taurasi said, complimenting her new opponent.
She is a gamer, which is the one thing about her that I truly adore. She has clearly put in a lot of work. Despite a great deal of pressure and obstacles thrown at her, she consistently performs well in every game. She has a very bright future, and it’s exciting to see that as she moves forward after becoming a veteran and playing in this league for a very long time.”
In another game, the Minnesota Lynx defeated the Chicago Sky 70-62. Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride both scored 13 points and 16 points, respectively.
