Mainland’s LJ McCray, 5-star DL recruit, signs with Florida during early signing period
The five-star defensive line prospect out of Mainland High School announced his intention to sign with the University of Florida on Instagram Live Wednesday night, honoring his commitment from October. McCray was originally expected to put pen to paper during a ceremony at Mainland as the early signing period opened Wednesday morning. But he delayed his announcement until 5:45 p.m.
“First, I would like to thank y’all for being along on my journey,” McCray said to kick off his livestream. “I didn’t even know if I was going to sign today or not. But a lot of thinking, a lot of praying. I think I’m making the right decision on where I want to go for the next few years.”
Despite his commitment to Florida, other programs — namely Auburn and Florida State — continued to push for the 6-foot-6, 260-pounder this month. His original top five included the Tigers, Seminoles, Gators, Georgia and Miami.
As recently as last Thursday, he posted a graphic on social media that said, “One week until I’m a Gator.”
“I don’t know why y’all thought I was flipping like that,” McCray said. “We ain’t going nowhere, baby! Let’s do it.”
McCray helped the Buccaneers to their first state championship in 20 years with a win over St. Augustine on Dec. 7. It capped a senior season in which he collected 85 tackles (38 for loss) and 13 sacks and his defense pitched six shutouts.

Also on that unit were South Florida commit Rodney Hill, Tulane commit Ezaiah Shine, Wofford commit Ramon McCollough Jr. and four-star defensive back Zavier Mincey.
Mincey privately submitted his commitment forms Wednesday but will not announce his destination until the All-American Bowl on Jan. 6. He released a top 10 list that featured Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Ole Miss, Penn State, Texas A&M and UCF in June.
Both he and McCray attended Mainland’s signing ceremony to support their teammates.
“NFL, man,” Mainland coach Travis Roland said. “Him and LJ, good God. (Their future schools) are getting humble superstars. In today’s era of football, you don’t get the humble superstar like that. It’s just not a normal thing. That’s the best part about those guys. They’re great teammates, and you’re getting humble stars.”
