Steve Kerr wants Warriors young forward to emulate Jimmy Butler

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has expressed a strong desire for young forward Jonathan Kuminga to emulate the disciplined and fundamental playing style of veteran Jimmy Butler. Kerr believes that adopting Butler’s approach will enhance Kuminga’s decision-making and overall game performance.

Kerr’s Perspective on Butler’s Influence

Kerr emphasized that Butler’s success stems from his simplicity and consistency on the court. He noted, “What makes Jimmy special is that he doesn’t try to be special. He just plays fundamental basketball… he never turns it over, he just makes a simple play over and over again.”

Kerr aims for Kuminga to learn from Butler’s ability to make straightforward decisions, thereby reducing turnovers and enhancing efficiency. He added, “He’s so explosive. I think it’s always hardest for guys who are the most talented to make decisions because they’ve got too many options at their disposal.”

Kuminga’s Development and Injury

Before sustaining a sprained right ankle on January 4, Kuminga was averaging 16.8 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. His absence has been felt, but Kerr is optimistic about his return and integration into the team’s rotation. Kerr stated, “We won’t really know when he’ll return to play… The Warriors begin a five-game trip Thursday against the Orlando Magic.”

Butler’s Role in Mentoring Kuminga

Jimmy Butler, who joined the Warriors via trade, has expressed a willingness to mentor Kuminga. Butler praised Kuminga’s athleticism and defensive capabilities, stating, “He’s so explosive… he can definitely guard. So, I think he’s going to come back and do … .”

Kerr hopes that Butler’s mentorship will help Kuminga develop a more measured and fundamental approach to the game, focusing on making the right choices and simplifying his play.
