Anzac Day saw Collingwood and Essendon get the first draw of the season after the Pies came back from a 27-point, first quarter deficit.
The tie extended Collingwood’s unbeaten record against Essendon to five games since the 2021 season.
Collingwood Form
No team has been able to travel to the Gold Coast and come away with the win this season and that now applies also to Collingwood, after they fell to the Suns 101-90.
It was a spirited comeback where the Pies kicked 6 goals turning a 27-point deficit into anyone’s game late in the fourth, but it was the young Suns that found the little extra.
It was just the Magpies second loss in 12 games, however the concerning factor for Collingwood is that they have now conceded 100+ points in three of their past 4 matches.
The Pies have been misfiring a little over the past two games and have not been as clean in the contestests, recording just 2 contested marks against the Suns and averaging just 61.5 total marks over the past two games.
Collingwood Team News
Beau McCreery will miss a month with a calf strain. John Noble will also miss Friday’s game due to concussion protocol.
Essendon Bombers Form
After going down 105-60 to Geelong last weekend, Essendon have now lost 3 of their past 4 games, however, still hold onto fourth on the ladder.
The Bombers bubble has burst and the reality of the weak strength of schedule at the start of the season is beginning to catch up to them. Essendon have generally been mid-pack this season in the important statistical categories and it is now beginning to level out with their results.
Contested possessions have hurt Essendon the most, ranked last in the AFL with just 7.9 contested marks per game and second-worst in the league with just 111.2 total contested possessions.
