In 2025, Alabama football will alter the yearly A-Day Spring game.

The University of Alabama’s annual A-Day Spring Game, traditionally a highlight of the Crimson Tide’s offseason, is undergoing significant changes for the 2025 season. Scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2025, at noon Central Time, this year’s event will deviate from its customary format and presentation. The university’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) collective announced the kickoff time on February 28, 2025.

Format Changes

In a departure from previous years, the 2025 A-Day game will not feature a live broadcast. Fans are invited to attend in person free of charge, but there will be no televised or streamed coverage of the event. Head coach Kalen DeBoer, now in his second year with Alabama, has indicated that the A-Day Game will be more practice-oriented rather than a traditional game setup. This approach addresses concerns over injuries and roster management, as several programs have opted to modify or cancel spring games for similar reasons.

Player Honors

A highlight of the A-Day festivities will be the honoring of the previous season’s team captains. Quarterback Jalen Milroe, offensive lineman Tyler Booker, safety Malachi Moore, and linebacker Deontae Lawson will have their hand and footprints cemented beside Denny Chimes on The Quad. This tradition celebrates the leadership and contributions of these players during the past season.

Spring Practice Overview

Spring practice serves as a critical period for team development, especially following a season that fell short of expectations. The Crimson Tide concluded the 2024 season with a 9-4 record, marking their worst performance since 2007. The upcoming spring sessions are viewed as an opportunity to rebuild and set the tone for the 2025 season.

Key Players to Watch

Several players are poised to make significant impacts during spring practice:

  • Ty Simpson (Quarterback): As a redshirt sophomore, Simpson has the most experience among returning quarterbacks. With Jalen Milroe’s departure to the NFL, Simpson is positioned to vie for the starting quarterback role.
  • Isaiah Horton (Wide Receiver): Transferred from Miami, Horton is expected to be a key contributor in the receiving corps. His familiarity with Simpson from their high school days adds a layer of synergy to the offense.
  • Wilkin Formby (Offensive Lineman): With the right tackle position seemingly his to lose, Formby’s performance will be crucial in solidifying the offensive line.
  • Jam Miller (Running Back): As the most experienced returning running back, Miller’s role will be pivotal in the ground game. However, competition from incoming talent suggests his starting position is not guaranteed.
  • Kam Dewberry (Offensive Lineman): A transfer from Texas A&M, Dewberry is expected to compete for the left guard position, aiming to fill the void left by Tyler Booker.

Coaching Philosophy

Coach Kalen DeBoer’s approach to the A-Day game reflects a broader philosophy of adaptability and strategic planning. Acknowledging the challenges posed by injuries and the evolving landscape of college football, DeBoer emphasizes the importance of flexibility in spring practice. This perspective aligns with his previous experiences, where spring games were viewed as “spring previews” rather than traditional competitive fixtures.

Looking Ahead

The modifications to the A-Day game are part of a larger strategy to navigate the complexities of modern college football. With roster fluctuations due to transfers and the increasing importance of NIL considerations, Alabama’s coaching staff is focused on creating a spring practice environment that balances tradition with contemporary challenges. As the team prepares for the 2025 season, these changes underscore a commitment to player development and competitive excellence.

The 2025 A-Day Spring Game represents a departure from tradition, reflecting the evolving dynamics of college football. While the event will not feature a live broadcast and will adopt a practice-centric format, it offers fans a unique opportunity to engage with the team during a pivotal period of transition and growth. As the Crimson Tide embark on this new chapter, the adjustments to the A-Day game serve as a testament to their resilience and adaptability in the face of change.
