Trio of Blue Devils Launch the Rising Athletes Foundation – Duke University

In December 2024, three student-athletes from Duke University—Connor Barket of the wrestling team, Ethan Grimminger of the wrestling team, and Zizi Newhard of the fencing team—came together to establish the Rising Athletes Foundation. Their shared vision was to bridge the gap between elite collegiate athletics and underserved youth in the Durham community, providing mentorship, resources, and opportunities for aspiring athletes.

The Genesis of the Rising Athletes Foundation

The idea for the Rising Athletes Foundation was conceived during a transformative service trip to Panama through Duke’s Athletics Community Engagement (ACE) program. This initiative offers student-athletes the chance to engage in immersive service experiences with international community partners. During this trip, Barket and his fellow athletes encountered a young boy with remarkable athletic potential. However, the lack of resources and support systems in his community meant that his talents would likely go untapped.

Reflecting on this experience, Barket realized that similar challenges existed within Durham. He shared, “We all know how much sports have affected our lives, so Emily Durham further pushed us, and reminded us this problem persists in Durham itself.” Motivated by this realization, Barket, Grimminger, and Newhard decided to take action. They envisioned a foundation that would not only provide mentorship but also offer financial assistance for sports camps, equipment, and other resources essential for young athletes to pursue their dreams.

The Founders: Athletes Committed to Change

Connor Barket – Wrestling

A redshirt sophomore from West Lafayette, Indiana, Connor Barket has been a standout on the Duke wrestling team. In the 2024–25 season, he achieved a 14–2 record and earned a top 30 national ranking for the first time in his career. His journey to success was not without challenges; Barket often contemplated quitting but credits wrestling with teaching him resilience and perseverance. He believes that the sport has been a “simulation of very challenging obstacles” and has instilled in him the values of hard work and integrity. These lessons have been instrumental in his leadership role within the team and in the foundation’s mission.

Ethan Grimminger – Wrestling

Ethan Grimminger, also a member of the Duke wrestling team, shared Barket’s vision and commitment to community service. While specific details about Grimminger’s athletic achievements are limited, his involvement in the foundation underscores his dedication to using sports as a platform for positive change.

Zizi Newhard – Fencing

Zizi Newhard, a fencer for Duke, has been recognized for her academic and athletic excellence. In the 2024 season, she competed in four events and secured 15 wins at the Philadelphia Invitational. Her achievements earned her a spot on the USFCA All-Academic Team and inclusion in the ACC Academic Honor Roll. Newhard’s commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics aligns with the foundation’s mission to inspire young athletes to pursue their goals with determination and integrity.

Mission and Vision of the Rising Athletes Foundation

The Rising Athletes Foundation aims to provide mentorship, academic support, and financial assistance to young athletes in the Durham area. The founders recognize the significant role that sports have played in their own lives and are committed to offering similar opportunities to others. Their vision includes:

  • Mentorship Programs: Connecting high school athletes with collegiate mentors who can provide guidance, support, and inspiration.
  • Academic Support: Assisting student-athletes in balancing their academic and athletic commitments, ensuring they have the tools to succeed in both arenas.
  • Financial Assistance: Providing resources for sports camps, equipment, and other necessities that may otherwise be inaccessible to underserved youth.
  • Community Engagement: Fostering a sense of community and belonging among young athletes, encouraging them to pursue their passions and dreams.

Looking Ahead

As the Rising Athletes Foundation continues to grow, the founders are focused on expanding their reach and impact. They are actively working to raise funds, build partnerships, and develop programs that will benefit young athletes in the Durham community. Their commitment to service and their belief in the transformative power of sports drive their efforts to make a lasting difference.

In the words of Barket, “We want to give back because we know how many resources we have, how privileged we are sitting in our position, and the effect we can have on these kids.” Through the Rising Athletes Foundation, Barket, Grimminger, and Newhard are not only shaping the future of young athletes but also exemplifying the values of leadership, service, and community.
