Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of the most successful rock bands in American history, but their music has reached far beyond the borders of the United States. The group earns a new hit on Billboard’s global ranking this frame–but they don’t have new music out. Instead, one of their most famous tracks finally debuts, decades after it was first released.
“Fortunate Son” debuts on the Billboard Global 200 this week. The smash opens at No. 199–in second-to-last place–on Billboard’s semi-namesake ranking of the most-consumed tracks in the world.
Creedence Clearwater Revival doubles their total number of hits on the Billboard Global 200 this week. Before “Fortunate Son” arrived, they’d only pushed one tune to the list, which uses a methodology that includes sales and streaming data to show what the world is listening to.
The band’s only other charting tune, “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?,” is still going strong on the list. This frame, it declines from No. 127 to No. 146.
“Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” has now lived on the Billboard Global 200 for 38 weeks. It’s risen as high as No. 99, peaking just inside the upper half of the list–and exactly 100 spaces above where “Fortunate Son” appears at the moment.
“Fortunate Son” was released by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1969 as a single from their album Willy and the Poor Boys. The tune was another smash for the group, after they had already established themselves as superstars in America with their signature Southern rock sound.
“Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” arrived two years later, shortly before the band called it quits. That track cracked the top 10 on the Hot 100–something “Fortunate Son” failed to do by only a few spots–and has lived on as one of their most successful tracks since.
