Wrexham set to confirm billionaire’s investment this month, official paperwork is first step in £450m plan

Wrexham have gone from strength to strength under Rob McElhenney and Reynolds, both on the pitch and behind the scenes.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over Wrexham in February 2021, buying the club for £2m.

Since then, they have won three successive promotions and are set to compete in the Championship for the first time ever.

Away from the plethora of on-field success, Wrexham posted record profits in 2023/24 when their accounts were released – their turnover is thought to be a League Two high.

As Wrexham continue to grow, Reynolds and McElhenney have been eyeing further investment from outside sources, with one deal to be confirmed in July.

Wrexham to confirm billionaire investment in official paperwork

As shown on Wrexham AFC’s Companies House, the club are due to file their latest confirmation statement by July 8, 2025.

The 2024 confirmation statement was made public on July 22, 2024, naming the shareholders at the time.

Since their 2024 statement, Wrexham have received investment from the Allyn family.

McElhenney and Reynolds were blown away by the Allyn family after they came on board late in October 2024, with an official statement from the club at the time confirming ‘the investment, which was made through Red Dragon Ventures LLC, will help fuel the Club’s lofty ambitions, as well as those of the broader Wrexham community’.

It means that when Wrexham file their 2025 confirmation statement, the Allyn family will now be included alongside Rob and Ryan.

The Wrexham Insider has spoken to finance expert Adam Williams about the Allyn family being included on the upcoming confirmation statement, and he was quick to mention how the American billionaires have already pledged ‘£450m for wider business projects in the city of Wrexham’

He said: “The Allyn family have a lot of liquid capital after selling their main business a few years ago.

“A football club, especially one as absurdly upwardly mobile as Wrexham, is a good place to park and grow that wealth.

“They bought into the club on a minority basis at a value of around £100m. If Wrexham’s own briefings to the press are to be believed, they think they are worth treble that, so ostensibly it’s a good investment.

“One thing I’ve not seen discussed much is the fact that the Allyn family appear to have pledged as much as £450m for wider business projects in the city of Wrexham.

“This is one of the luxuries that owning part of a football club gets you. It’s a foot in the door with local authorities. It gives you a certain cachet. It means people are always going to pick up the phone to you.

“A lot of the Allyn family’s money is going to go towards the redevelopment of the stadium. If and when they do decide to sell their stake – and we’re talking very long-term here – then they are going to make a big profit. But in the meantime, the wider investment in Wrexham can actively generate more money for them.

“With every stadium redevelopment project these days, there is always an urban regeneration or real estate play attached. This is an area I think investors are seeing a lot of value, sometimes with the football club itself as a loss leader. It’s an interesting approach.”

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds eye more Wrexham investment

The Allyn family coming on board, as Williams mentioned, is helping Wrexham redevelop the Kop and will provide more investment into the community.

But Wrexham’s current owners are already looking to bring another party into the picture to further grow the club.

Reynolds and McElhenney want to sell a Wrexham stake amid the Dragons’ latest valuation of £350m.

A Middle East deal for the Dragons has been mooted, with the possibility of Turki Al-Sheikh taking over discussed.

Al-Sheikh has been linked to Bristol City in the last few weeks, having already purchased a Spanish club several years ago, and he has previously been mooted for a takeover of Sheffield Wednesday or Millwall.
