heartbreaking news: Gemma Grainger has just announce a devastating news…

There were two major reasons for North Wales football to smile after today’s latest success for the national women’s team.

Cymru’s 6-0 victory in Kosovo included two late goals from Hawarden hero Elise Hughes and a senior international debut for Flint’s magical defender Mayzee Davies in the 2025 European Women’s Championship – WEQ League Stage Group B4 tie.

The thumping victory at the Zahir Pajaziti Stadium made it two wins out of two for new Cymru women’s team head coach Rhian Wilkinson.

Hughes, 22, who is joint leading scorer in the FA Women’s Championship this season with 15 goals for Crystal Palace, tripled her international tally with a late double in Kosovo after coming on as a second half substitute.

Her first senior goal for Wales came in a 2-1 Uefa Nations League defeat against Iceland last December.

She struck in the 85th and 93rd minutes to round off a convincing success for Wilkinson’s wonders today.

Rachel Rowe (2), Kayleigh Barton and Ffion Morgan bagged the other Red Dragons goals.

Davies replaced Josie Green in the 77th minute.

The 17-year-old Manchester United defender was first selected for Wales’ senior squad by then interim head coach Jon Grey in February.

Mayzee is the daughter of former Flint Town United, Chester City, Airbus UK, Colwyn Bay and Holywell Town defender John Davies.

She started playing at Flint at 7, then moved on to Llandudno for a season before signing for Everton aged 9.
Mayzee had a season with the Toffees before being offered a switch to Manchester City a year later.

A move to United followed for the centre-back, who had represented Wales at under-15, U17 and U19 level before today.

To have two North Walians featuring in the Cymru side has to be good news for the area.

With the talent we currently possess, it should only be a matter of time before more girls from the north win their international spurs.
