MLB insider reveals a significant alteration The Toronto Blue Jays could play in the offseason.
With manager John Schneider in charge, the youthful core of Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led the Toronto Blue Jays into the season with hopes of qualifying for the postseason. As August draws to a close, MLB rumors about impending changes for Toronto are starting to surface.
In 2024, the Blue Jays have been a huge letdown. As MLB games begin today, the team is about 10 games below.500, and the Blue Jays lineup hardly makes the top 20 in terms of runs scored. Because of this, the team decided to be sellers at the trade deadline, as evidenced by the frequent appearances of Bichette and Guerrero Jr. in MLB trade rumors.
Although Toronto planned to make more significant changes this offseason, it kept both of its young stars. Guerrero Jr. is expected to play for the Blue Jays through 2025, but this isn’t the case for another important team member.
While Blue Jays executives Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins are probably going to “survive” through the 2024 offseason, Schneider might be the team’s “fall guy” this winter and end up being one of the MLB managers fired in 2024, according to a Thursday story by Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
The reasoning behind Toronto’s actions may even go beyond this season. Heyman draws attention to a 2023 MLB playoff incident in which Atkins criticized Schneider’s pitching selections. The Blue Jays’ failure to make the playoffs could be Schneider’s breaking point because the two players don’t seem to be on the same page.
If that occurs, Skip Schumaker, the captain of the Miami Marlins, and Don Mattingly, the coach of Toronto’s bench, are expected to be considered as Blue Jays managerial candidates this offseason. Toronto would have one of the most appealing jobs available, given the talent on the roster.
