Mike McCarthy ‘fed up’ with Jerry Jones over Dallas Cowboys’ Super Bowl pursuit

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is “fed up” with owner Jerry Jones’ infamous interference as the franchise gears up for a make-or-break season.

In the wake of the Cowboys’ embarrassing defeat at home to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs, speculation swirled about McCarthy ‘s job security. Despite potential replacements like Mike Vrabel, Jim Harbaugh, and Bill Belichick on the market, Jones confirmed McCarthy would be at the helm for the upcoming season.

The 60-year-old, who won Super Bowl XLV champion with the Packers, will lead the Cowboys into 2024 without a contract extension. Jones has suggested that a head coach can face unique challenges when in the last year of their contract, pointing to Jason Garrett’s own experience doing so with Dallas.

Yet, it’s understood that McCarthy is less than thrilled with the situation in the front office. After Jones proclaimed the NFC East team was “all in” earlier this offseason, lingering contract disputes, including quarterback Dak Prescott’s, have cast a shadow over the Cowboys’ preparations for 2024.

“He’s doing it the best he can,” a former Cowboys staff member confided to Go Long. “Some of the people I’ve talked to have said that he’s getting fed up with it a little bit.”

Sympathy was also extended towards Prescott, with the source noting: “It’s hard. I feel bad for Dak. I think Dak’s a really good quarterback who is capable of taking a team to the Super Bowl. He’s got to overcome a lot of things.”

McCarthy boasts an impressive regular season record as the Cowboys head coach with 42 wins and 25 losses, translating to a win rate of 62.7 per cent – the highest for any coach in the team’s history. He’s led Dallas to two NFC East titles in three years, yet playoff glory eludes them, with a disappointing 1-3 record in the postseason during his tenure.

Under McCarthy’s leadership, the Cowboys have consistently performed well in the regular season, securing at least 12 victories for three consecutive seasons; a feat only matched by the team’s 1990s dynasty era. However, this success hasn’t been mirrored in the playoffs, and key player departures like Tony Pollard to the Titans and Tyler Biadasz to the Commanders could further hinder their prospects.

With Prescott’s future uncertain and McCarthy entering the last year of his contract, tensions are high. Reports from Go Long suggest that “current players are more concerned about Jerry Jones than their own head coach”, casting a shadow over the team’s morale as they aim to capture their first Super Bowl title since 1995.
