Shattered AFL star Adam Treloar has broken his silence on his tumultuous exit from Collingwood after his former club blamed his netball player wife for the departure.
The star midfielder was traded to the Western Bulldogs in a last minute deal on the final day of AFL trade period on Thursday night.
There was rampant speculation about his future during the AFL trade period after his wife Kim Ravaillon signed with Super Netball club Queensland Firebirds for next year with plans to take their baby girl with her.
Despite Treloar’s wishes to remain at Magpies until his contract ended in 2025, Collingwood list manager Ned Guy claimed the Magpies wouldn’t have considered moving Treloar if his wife continued her netball career in Victoria.
Treloar expressed his bitter disappointment in how things at the Magpies played out externally when he faced the media on Friday.
The way they went about it kind of hurt,’ Treloar told reporters.
‘I wish I could have finished my career at Collingwood, that’s the honest truth.
‘They were adamant that they had to move me on… they genuinely thought I wasn’t going to manage being away from my family.’
He also claimed Magpies coach Nathan Buckley called him to inform him the senior playing group no longer wanted him at the club, which Buckley has previously denied.
‘That was told to me in no uncertain way and that did hurt, because I know how close I am with the players,’ Treloar said.
‘To be told that, when I don’t think that’s the truth, and to be told that there’s some players that don’t want you there when I know the majority of the players love me and care for me, that did hurt a bit.
‘But they were adamant on moving me on so no matter how they were going to go about it, it was going to happen. It was a fight up until the end, because I wanted to be at Collingwood.’
He also hit back at Guy’s comments made hours earlier about his family situation, adding he wishes things had not played out so publicly.
Treloar wore the red white and blue colours for the first time at Western Bulldogs club headquarters on Friday, where he was joined by his wife and their eight-month-old Georgie.
He also posted a video message for Bulldogs fans.
‘It’s been a crazy, crazy 15 hours for me. I’m excited to be here at Whitten Oval as a Western Bulldogs football player,’ he said.
‘I couldn’t be more pumped about chucking on this Bulldogs polo and eventually getting to know everyone.’
‘I’m just thrilled to be here for the rest of my career.’
