Report: Newcastle could go for ‘versatile’ English free-agent Jamie Carragher called a ‘legend’

Newcastle United have now been linked with a move for winger Reiss Nelson after his Arsenal contract expired yesterday.

We proposed the idea last month that Joe Willock could convince his good friend Reiss Nelson to turn his back on Arsenal and join him in at Newcastle and it seems that the club are thinking the same thing.

A report in Football Transfers has credited Newcastle with an interest in the versatile winger, going as far to say that they’ve made contact with Nelson’s representatives. They also say that Arsenal have offered him a new deal which could convince him to stay put.

Reiss Nelson scored a very important goal for Arsenal last season

The 23-year-old made a few brief but exceptionally important appearances for Arsenal last season, scoring two and providing one in Arsenal’s humiliation of Nottingham Forest, but more importantly, Nelson scored a last-minute winner against Bournemouth which kept Arsenal in the title race.

After scoring that goal, Jamie Carragher admitted he celebrated saying on Sky Sports (via Sportskeeda): “I was in the car and I was celebrating. Go for it, embrace it. That will be one of those moments that… if Arsenal go on and win the league, that moment will be remembered forever and he [Nelson] will be an Arsenal legend for that moment. There’s always huge moments.

Willock and Nelson reunited at club level could see them get international call ups

Nelson is very close with Joe Willock from their time together at Arsenal and if anyone could convince Nelson to come to the North East it would be Willock.

The London-born winger has represented England at all levels from Under 16 to Under 21 but, like Joe Willock, hasn’t managed to break his way into Gareth Southgate‘s thoughts. Maybe watching them play together at Newcastle could change that.

On a free I see no real reason why Newcastle shouldn’t at least try. It’s a position we need cover for and our budget is apparently limited. It’s a no-brainer.
