Former NFL cornerback D.J. Hayden, who played his final season with the Washington Commanders in 2021, was one of six persons killed in a car incident in Houston early Saturday morning.
He was 33 years old at the time.
Zach McMillian, a former University of Houston defensive back, was also killed in the accident.
Hayden began his college career at Navarro College in his home state of Texas, then transferred to the University of Houston from 2011 to 2012 before being picked by the Raiders in the first round in 2013.
Hayden’s final college season was marred by a life-threatening cardiac problem caused by a collision with another player during practice. Despite this, he went on to become a college standout.
Hayden played in the NFL for nine years after being a first-round draft pick, spending the first four with the Raiders before moving on to the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and lastly the Washington Football Team.
Hayden had 328 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and four interceptions in 92 games. He was last seen in the league in 2021.
