Matt Eberflus, the head coach of the Chicago Bears, must be fired immediately.
The Chicago Bears were on their way to a big win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
The victory would have marked Matt Eberflus’ first two-game winning streak as the Bears’ head coach, as well as Eberflus’ first victory against the NFC North division.
The problem is that the Bears stopped playing with 4:15 left in the game. Despite a 26-14 advantage by the Bears at the time, the Lions scored 17 unanswered points to win the game.
On Sunday, the Bears were the healthiest they had been all season, with Justin Fields returning after missing the previous four games, and Eberflus has been and will continue to be mistaken about the team’s closeness.
For the previous two years, the Bears have demonstrated that they do not know how to win games and instead find creative ways to lose them.
Other teams in the Bears’ situation, such as the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos, have showed progression for their troubles during the first half of the 2023-2024 NFL season, however the Bears have experienced regression.
Momentum appeared to be building in the favor of the Bears re-signing Eberflus for next season, but Sunday provided yet another reminder of why that cannot happen. Eberflus has shown to be an overachieved defensive coordinator, and in a season where his defense has lost two-possession leads in the fourth quarter twice, this type of incompetence cannot continue. Not to mention the fact that Eberflus has had two assistants fired from his coaching staff due to HR concerns.
The Bears are a broken organization, and while a new head coach will not address all of their problems, it will provide more hope than if they do not make a change.
