Official: Jason Shivers joins the Edmonton Elks as defensive coordinator after they complete the coaching staff
After eight years with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Jason Shivers has officially joined the coaching staff of the Edmonton Elks. Under head coach and general manager Chris Jones, he will be the team’s defensive coordinator, linebackers coach, and assistant head coach.

The 41-year-old was a defensive back for the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats during his five seasons in the Canadian Football League. In 2013, when Jones was the team’s defensive coordinator, he joined Toronto as a defensive assistant. The following year, when Jones took over as head coach, he was appointed as Edmonton’s defensive backs coach.

In 2016, Shivers moved with Jones to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, where he took on the role of defensive backs coach. After Jones left for the NFL in 2019, he was elevated to the position of defensive coordinator, a position he held for five years.

This past season, Saskatchewan’s defense gave up an average of 381.3 yards per game, which placed them ninth in net offense allowed. In terms of offensive touchdowns allowed (51), sacks (37), takeaways (29), and offensive points allowed (28.3), the team also finished ninth.

After replacing Stephen McAdoo as offensive coordinator midway through the previous campaign, Jarious Jackson has stayed in that position for Edmonton. In addition, he will coach the team’s quarterbacks.

Erin Craig, the strength and conditioning coach, Mike Scheper, the coordinator of special teams, and Markus Howell, the receivers coach and pass game coordinator, are all back with the Elks from the previous campaign. Along with his return, Stephen Sorrells is now the team’s offensive line coordinator in addition to his offensive line coaching role.

Albert Poree, the running backs coach, Marcus Klund, the defensive backs coach, assistant offensive line coach Takoby Cofield, and defensive line coach Nate O’Neal are all new to the team.

Klund spent the previous two seasons coaching Saskatchewan’s defensive backs. Prior to this, he worked as a high school and collegiate coach for fifteen years. During his nine years there, he was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Southwest Baptist University.

For the previous ten seasons, O’Neal served as Under Armour All-America Football’s defensive line coach. In addition, he advised both teams at the East-West Shrine Bowl in 2022 and coached the American defensive line in the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Poree was the running backs coach for the Southeastern Louisiana Lions for the previous four seasons. The New Orleans, Louisiana native has also served as a coach at Mississippi State University and Dartmouth College.

Cofield played offensive line for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 15 games during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The 32-year-old Tarboro, North Carolina native played for the Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, and Washington Football Team in the past.

Jordan Linnen, the running backs coach, is now an assistant with the Roughriders, while Brandon Isaac, the team’s defensive backs coach this past season, now holds the same position with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. After six seasons as the defensive line coach for Edmonton, Demetrious Maxie is currently with the Toronto Argonauts.
