Despite the Merseyside club’s recent troubles, the German coach’s contract at the organization doesn’t expire until 2026, unless the 55-year-old decides to leave himself.
Prior to taking the position at Aston Villa, Steven Gerrard seemed the logical candidate to take over as Klopp’s successor. However, the Liverpool star has had a setback in his managing career and his time at Villa has demonstrated that he still has a long way to go before taking over at Anfield.
The Reds will now be keeping an eye on the Bundesliga for Klopp’s prospective replacement, according to Liverpool journalist Neil Jones.
In an article for GOAL, Jones stated that Liverpool will be watching how former Red Xabi Alonso’s coaching career develops. Alonso is currently enjoying excellent success at Bayer Leverkusen.
Liverpool will undoubtedly keep a tight eye on Alonso’s progress, Jones wrote. Jurgen Klopp is still under contract until 2026, but given Steven Gerrard’s difficulties at Aston Villa, it is difficult to predict who will succeed him. Alonso has nothing but pleasant memories of his five years spent on Merseyside, and Reds supporters continue to remember him with affection.
The Spaniard took over at Leverkusen last autumn and has led the German team from 17th in the Bundesliga league all the way up to their present status of 9th after working first with Real Madrid’s U-13 side and then with Real Sociedad’s B squad.
With five straight victories on either side of the World Cup, Bayer Leverkusen is the Bundesliga’s current form team, and a victory over Borussia Dortmund on Sunday might keep it going.
Alonso was a much-loved figure at Anfield, and Reds fans would be thrilled to see him return to the Merseyside club at some point in the future.
