Liverpool and Manchester United may be involved in a free transfer battle this summer.

Liverpool and Manchester United have been urged to sign free agent Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha this summer. The 30-year-contract old’s at Selhurst Park expires in July, and he is widely expected to leave rather than extend his stay.

Zaha left Palace in 2013 after agreeing a £15 million summer transfer to United in January.

He was Sir Alex Ferguson’s final signing at Old Trafford, but he was released less than two years later for £3 million.

Over the last decade, Zaha has grown into an established Premier League star and a true Eagles icon.

However, his time at the club is likely to come to an end for the second time at the end of the season.

However, there has been no concrete talk about his destination since clubs declined to take up his reported £80m price tag in January.

Former Manchester United defender Danny Simpson believes Jurgen Klopp should compete with Erik ten Hag for Zaha’s signature.

“He can go wherever he wants, especially on a free contract,” he told Stadium Astro. Wilf [Zaha] plays better when he is the main man, in my opinion.

“He came to Manchester United. I know he was much younger, but if he joins another top-four or top-six team, he won’t be the main man, so it’ll be interesting to see where he goes.

“I think someone like Liverpool could do with him at the moment because it’s not happening for them.

“I’d bring him back to Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford is a number nine, and Wilfried is on the left. That’s a lot of firepower.”

A Premier League stalwart on a free transfer could be too enticing an opportunity to miss, though, and has the potential to spark a high-profile race for his signature.
