Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has said that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal should not sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.

Merson has written in GiveMeSport that Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins would not score enough goals for Arsenal.

The former Arsenal and Villa striker does not see Watkins scoring 25 goals a season for the Gunners.

TEAMtalk reported in April that Arsenal are interested in signing the 27-year-old striker in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also keen on Watkins.

The report has claimed that the Gunners, Spurs and the Magpies “all expressed an interest in the 27-year-old via his representatives”.

However, the striker has decided to stay at Villa and sign a new contract.

Merson wrote: “Ollie Watkins I can’t see scoring 25 goals a season. Unai Emery has made him a better player but I don’t think he has the quality.

“If Arsenal bought him and he went and he only got ten goals next season, you wouldn’t be shocked.”

Arsenal should aim higher than Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins

In our view, Arsenal should aim for someone better than Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

Yes, the 27-year-old is a very good striker, but he is not at the level to lead Arsenal to Premier League glory.

If the Gunners are to sign a new striker in the summer transfer window, then they should sign someone who is world class and who has extensive experience of playing in Europe as well.

After all, Arsenal will play in the UEFA Champions League next season and will aim to do the same in the coming years.
