Newcastle United were interested in signing West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta in May, but instead chose to focus on signing Sandro Tonali, according to Fabrizio Romano’s exclusive column for CaughtOffside.

The Brazil international has flourished at the London Stadium, but his future appeared to be in doubt over the summer as Manchester City and Newcastle both looked at him.

According to Romano in today’s Substack column, Newcastle considered Paqueta in May, but it appears they made Tonali their priority, bringing in the Italy international from AC Milan in one deal.

of their most high-profile deals of the summer.

Paqueta will undoubtedly remain a player to watch, though Romano is not aware of any concrete developments, as City also signed an alternative in midfield in the form of Matheus Nunes from Wolves.

“Another deal that nearly happened this summer was Lucas Paqueta, who was targeted by Manchester City,” Romano stated of the Paqueta controversy.

“Of course, clubs are now looking forward to the conclusion of the investigation story.” Newcastle was also interested in May, but never offered ideas because their priority was Sandro Tonali.

“Manchester City have always admired Paqueta, but they’ve spent a lot of money on Matheus Nunes, so they’re not planning on moving him in January.”
