Newcastle United’s Joelinton could require surgery to fix a groin problem and could be out for up to six weeks, according to an injury expert.

Ben Dinnery, a medical and data analysis specialist at Premier Injuries, says Joelinton could be out for six weeks after sustaining two groin injuries in the first 40 minutes of last Saturday’s (22 January).

The injury occurred when Joelinton was taken off at half-time against Leeds United, before being replaced by Eddie Howe.

According to the Shields Gazette, the manager said the striker, who has been in fine form, has been battling a persistent groin issue since the beginning of Eddie Howe’s reign.

According to Football Insider’s Adam Williams, the manager said: “He’s been dealing with a groin issue since the early days of his time here at the club.”

According to Dinnery, the Brazilian could have sustained a ‘sportsman’s hernia’ which would require surgery.

It is possible that Joelinton has a sportsman’s hernia, which can be a painful issue but can be managed carefully. This is why many players who have this issue continue to play. For example, Vydra has been in the Burnley starting lineup for several months. He was scheduled to have surgery but it was cancelled due to Covid, which suggests that the issue is more likely to be related to pain management. Looking at his recent performances, it doesn’t seem to be too serious. With some rest, it is hoped that the issue can be managed and he will be able to return to the Premier League after the break. If a hernia is found, surgery may be necessary. We have seen players return after five to six weeks.

Although Joelinton has only scored one goal and provided one assist in his 22 appearances this season, Howe has praised his recent form.

The win sees Newcastle move into 18th place in the Premier League table.
