Charlie Cresswell has not been given much chance in the Championship at the moment, having been dropped for the midweek game against Hull City.

Leeds have finally put together a team with some real depth in key areas of the pitch, but it has had an effect on the fringe players at the club.

Now that Leeds have more depth, some players who deserve to be in the first team are being dropped every week.

Cresswell’s case for a place in the team has been weakened by Joe Rodon’s sending off, who returned to the starting line-up for yesterday’s match against Watford but is unlikely to make an impact in the long-term.

Liam Cooper’s return to the squad in midweek saw him replace Cresswell in the match against Hull City, who had been out injured since the season’s opening game.

Cooper’s return meant Cresswell had to stay at home as the game was a goalless draw.

Phil Hay, the Athletic’s manager, has now suggested that Cresswell could leave the club in January if his current situation does not improve. Hay told The Square Ball podcast that it was “remarkable” that Cresswell had not been included in the squad and that there had been “a lot of interest” in him. He added that Cresswell’s future at Leeds was uncertain, with Rodon having been a “great addition” to the side and Struijk and Cooper “not ideal for him”.
