Mealer becomes first known football recruit to de-commit ASU and Arizona

In less than a year, former Hamilton High lineman Toby Mealer committed to Arizona and ASU only to de-commit each time.

Less than four months ago, Toby Mealer said his recruitment was “fully closed” following his commitment to Arizona State.

On Sunday, the 2025 offensive lineman who has transferred from Chandler Hamilton High to Lehi High in Utah, announced via social media that he was back on the market.

“There have personally been highs and lows in the recruiting process,” Mealer wrote in a post on X that thanked ASU staff and mentioned his status as the first in-state commitment in the class for the Sun Devils.

“Having said all of this, some things in my life have changed and my family has left Arizona so I will no longer be playing my senior year there,” Mealer wrote. “After long hard talks with my family I decided it was best if I decommit ASU and give ASU and myself an opportunity to explore all options and possibilities.”

Mealer, at 6-foot-5 and 340 pounds, initially committed to Arizona last May before backing off that pledge just two weeks later. The Sun Devils offered a scholarship in December, mere weeks after Kenny Dillingham was hired to be their head coach. Mealer was on ASU’s campus numerous times before he committed.

“I feel like my commitment is now fully closed,” Mealer said in late November after pledging to the Sun Devils. “I’m not looking at anywhere else.”

Now, Mealer has become the first known player to commit to both Arizona and ASU only to later de-commit from both programs before even completing his junior season of high school.
