Reports: Former Auburn DB JD Rhym transferring to Houston, set to reunite with Zac Etheridge

Former Auburn defensive back JD Rhym is expected to transfer to Houston, 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz first reported Thursday.

Rhym entered the transfer portal in late March after having only appeared in three games in 2023. The year prior, Rhym played in seven games for the Tigers.

Across his two seasons on The Plains, the former 4-star prospect out of Valdosta, Ga. tallied 20 total tackles and an interception.

In November, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze told reporters that he and Rhym were “working through some personal issues.”

“It’s week to week. I think he’s got potential to be a really good contributor to our team, (but) we’ve just got to make sure the standard that we want for all of our players is being upheld,” Freeze said during the SEC coaches teleconference Nov. 8. “We’re kind of at a point now where you’re wondering if it’s better to redshirt him or not.”

Now, Rhym is set to take his talents to Houston with, where he will join a rebuilding Cougars program, which is now under the leadership of first-year head coach Willie Fritz.

In transferring to Houston, Rhym will also be reuniting with former Auburn assistant and player Zac Etheridge, who resigned as Auburn’s defensive backs coach in January and was quickly added to Fritz’s assembling staff at Houston.
