Gaby Agbonlahour, a former Aston Villa striker, has called on Tottenham to make a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney, after Bee manager Thomas Frank has opened the door for him to leave in January. Toney has been mooted as a potential target for several Premier League sides, including Arsenal and Chelsea.

Agbonlahor believes Spurs need Toney more than they need Richarlison and summer signing Johnson, and reckons that if they fail to sign a natural successor to Harry Kane, they could end up missing out on a top four spot.

Last season, Toney scored 21 times in 35 appearances for Brentford, while he has gone on to score 32 times in 68 Premier League games, averaging almost a goal a game.

Frank is bracing for a raft of bids when Toney returns on January 17, having been banned by the FA for gambling offences.

Agbonlahor went on to discuss the striker’s future and where Spurs could go next. “If I was Spurs, I’d want this done now,” he said. “I think they should get it all sorted out today, and then he’ll come in on January 1 and play towards the end of that month.”

Agbonlahor believes Spurs need a full-time striker. “Johnson and Richarlison are not the answer, they’re players who can play on both sides of the pitch. Toney is an excellent player, and you can imagine the service he’d get – especially from Maddison.”

Spurs must make sure this happens, because if they don’t, it could end up costing them a top four finish.

Spurs have started the new season on a high, winning four of their first five games and scoring 13 times in those games. Only Manchester City and Brighton have scored more.
