After a rumoured Leeds bid, a player with ‘inherent talent’ inks a new contract with the club.

If Leeds United were planning to sign Matt O’Riley from Celtic in the January transfer window, they should reconsider.

Leeds United have been linked with a summer transfer for Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley.
Leeds United reportedly intended to sign Celtic’s Matt O’Riley during the summer transfer window.

Leeds offered Celtic £10 million in transfer fees for O’Riley, according to Sky Sports on August 31.

Celtic, the defending Scottish Premiership champions, reportedly rejected the deal and “reiterated to Leeds that the midfielder is not for sale.”

Celtic are looking to win the Scottish Premiership again this season, as well as compete in the UEFA Champions League.

And the Hoops have opted to extend O’Riley’s contract.

Leeds’ prospects of signing the 22-year-old midfielder in the January transfer window are almost certainly over.

Matt O’Riley has signed a new deal with Celtic.
O’Riley has “signed a new four-year deal that will keep him at Celtic until 2027,” according to the Hoops’ official website.

“It’s probably hard to put it into a short sentence, but I think everybody knows how much I enjoy playing here, especially at Celtic Park because I don’t think you get that anywhere else,” the midfielder stated.

Brendan Rodgers, the Celtic manager, said: “Matt has so much to his game but always wants to learn, develop and grow further and from that perspective, together with the inherent talent he has, he really is a joy to coach and work with.”

On Saturday, O’Riley celebrated his new deal by scoring for Celtic against Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership.

Motherwell were defeated 2-1 away from home by the Hoops.

In the seventh minute of injury time, the Denmark Under-21 international scored the game-winning goal.

O’Riley has five goals and two assists in seven Scottish Premiership appearances this season.

Last season, the midfielder scored three goals and provided 12 assists in 32 league appearances for the Hoops.
